Crane Accident Results in Death of North Dakota Oil Worker

The incident shows why extra care is needed at oil wells and why regulations must be enforced

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reported that, recently, a North Dakota man was killed when a crane struck a worker at an oil well site in Mountrail County. It was the second death at an oil field within the week.

According to OSHA, a 36-year-old man died after being hit by the boom of a crane that was being used to remove pipe from the ground. Five crew members were working together to replace a tool located 650 feet underground. When the crane boom was lowered, it hit the man in the upper torso and killed him.

The men worked for Advance Energy, and the oil well is owned by EOG Resources, which is based out of Houston. No other details of the incident were made available.

A second incident occurred the same week in Rock Springs, Wyoming. One man was killed and two others were seriously injured after an explosion and fire broke out at an oil well. A 52-year-old man died later in the afternoon after sustaining injuries in the explosion that morning. A 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old man were airlifted to a burn center in Minnesota with third-degree burns to 70 percent of their bodies. Both men were in critical condition immediately following the incident. A 40-year-old man was also treated for minor burns to his face but was released.

According to OSHA, these deaths bring the toll to 50 for fatalities related to oil-field incidents in North Dakota since the end of 2010.
